A group aiming to raise £20,000 to buy a new play area in Mendlesham has reached the £6,000 mark.

In October 2013, arsonists set fire to the village’s children’s play area causing thousands of pounds of damage.

Since then, a group of residents has worked tirelessly to raise cash to replace it.

On February 28 the village is hosting its next event, a nearly new baby and toddler sale, from 10am to 2pm in the village’s community centre.

Vicky Sorhaindo, from the fund-raising group, said they were now looking to apply for grants to get the job done.

“So far we are up to about £6,000.

“Because we have manbaged to raise this significant amount of money, we can step forward with a few applications for grants. We would be looking to get the project completed this summer.

“But we are still trying to raise as much as we can and keep people interested in raising even more money.”
