Three men who attacked another as he lay on a shop floor - one using a baseball bat - are to be sentenced by a crown court.

On April 27, Jonathan Mansworth and brothers Henry and Sam Mayhew attacked a man they had chased into the Spar shop in the St Olaves Precinct in Bury St Edmunds, and left him bleeding on the floor.

Prosecuting at Bury Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, Stephen Coleman said the men, and a man who remains unidentified, were seen getting out of a car and chasing the victim into the Spar, knocking a member of the public over in the process.

“They caught up with the male, who had slipped down one of the aisles, and begun hitting and kicking him as he lay curled up on the floor protecting himself,” said Mr Coleman, adding that Mansworth hit the victim with a baseball bat, including in his head.

“When they left the store, they put their hoods up to hide their faces,” said Mr Coleman.

Sam, 22, of Snowdrop Close, Bury, and Henry, 24, formerly of the same address, pleaded guilty to affray.

Mansworth, 23, of Northgate Street, Bury, pleaded guilty to affray and possessing an offensive weapon in public.

All three men were released on unconditional bail until their sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court.
