Police in Bury St Edmunds are appealing for information after a man was assaulted in the town during the early hours of Sunday.

The man left Flex Nightclub after 2am and went to the taxi rank opposite Toymaster, where he got a taxi on his own.

He was dropped at a road on the Howard Estate that he believes may have been Wollaston Close. The man then approached a property with a white door, tried to enter and knocked on the door.

The door was opened by a white female, before a man hit the victim over the head with a metal bar, causing a cut.

The man is described as white, of large build, around 6ft tall, in his mid-twenties, with dark brown receding hair and wearing an off-white coloured jumper.

The victim then left the area and used a phone box to call police at 4.15am.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the assault or heard a disturbance on the Howard Estate between 3am to 4.15am to get in contact.

Officers are also keen to speak to the taxi driver who took the man from the town to the area.

Anyone with information in relation to the incident is asked to contact Sgt Matthew Gilbert at Bury St Edmunds Police on 101 quoting BU/14/942 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
