A man is in a critical condition after a car collided with a tree and caught fire in Elmswell yesterday.

The man, aged in his 40s, suffered life threatening and life changing injuries after a blue Dacia Sandero left Ashfield Road at about 4.55pm.

Members of the public stopped and helped to free him.

Police, ambulance and fire crews attended the incident, which was about 170 yards after the Norton Road junction heading towards the village.

He was airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital and remains in a critical condition.

The road remained closed until just after 10.30pm.

Witnesses should call the Bury St Edmunds Roads Policing and Firearms Operations Team on 101 quoting reference CAD 271 of May 10.

Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have dash cam footage.
