A man wanted by police in connection with a sexual assault in Bury St Edmunds has been arrested.

The 20-year-old man, who police want to speak to following the sexual assault of a 25-year-old woman in the Shakers Lane area of Bury St Edmunds in May 2015, has been arrested in Romania.

The man detained by police earlier today, Friday 22 January, after Suffolk Police officers investigating the case secured a European Arrest Warrant.

The 25-year-old woman sustained a wrist injury in the incident which happened around 10.30pm on Monday 11 May.

She reported that she had been followed by a man along Mount Road End and forced into a wooded area, where a sexual assault took place.

In the days following the incident police carried out extensive enquiries, including local checks and media appeals, and the investigation has continued to trace the man responsible.

Today the 20-year-old has been detained on suspicion of attempted rape, sexual assault, causing a female to engage in sexual activity and assault.

There will now be legal proceedings in Romania before he can be brought back to the UK.
