A man has been convicted of assaulting a man and a woman at an engagement party in Rattlesden.

Adam Gooderham, 35, had denied the offences but was today found guilty by a jury at Ipswich Crown Court.

Judge David Goodin told Gooderham, of Crane’s Meadow, Harleston, that he would be sentenced next month.

Gooderham will continue to be granted bail until his next court appearance.

Judge Goodin ordered the preparation of a pre-sentence report by the Probation Service.

During his trial, Gooderham claimed that when he carried out the assaults in the early hours of August 31 last year he had been acting in self-defence.

Gooderham told the court that he had already been holding a beer bottle when he lashed out, believing his girlfriend was being attacked, and had not picked the bottle up to use as a weapon.

After being punched in the face he had been disorientated, said Gooderham.

He said he had struck out because he could hear his girlfriend shouting that she was being attacked.

The prosecution alleged that Gooderham had launched his attack without establishing what was taking place and as a result struck a man and a woman, one of whom was punched in the face.

Gooderham was found guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm and common assault.
