STOWMARKET-based Muntons has become the first maltster in the world to make a dedicated appointment to ensure it meets its commitment to produce 100 per cent low-carbon malt within the next five years.

Melissa Abbott has been appointed grain value chain specialist, a role that will see her drive to ensure everyone along the supply chain from farmer to end customer is working towards the same environmental goal.

The company is already the first of its kind in the world to commit to purchasing only low-carbon grain in the future.

The firm has identified the transport of around 250,000 tonnes of grain to its sites in Bridlington in Yorkshire and Stowmarket, as one of its biggest challenges.

Muntons is currently ranked 20th in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies list.
