Lord Tebbit to open start ups business conference in Bury St Edmunds

Lord Tebbit will urge new business owners to seize the opportunity both to succeed and help drag our economy out of recession.

The former secretary of state for trade and industry, who now lives in Bury St Edmunds, will open a business conference aimed at new and existing small businesses, at the town’s Apex on May 14.

Of 4,000 businesses starting up in 2012, it is expected that 2,500 will succeed – business leaders say that these pre-start, new start and young businesses are the vital life blood to our local economy and jobs The StartUp Anglia ‘Develop Your Business’ Interactive Conference, organised by StartUp Suffolk and the Bury St Edmunds Business Festival team, will give a chance to hear from 50 experienced and award-winning entrepreneurs and 20 guest speakers.

The day will cover everything from good marketing to the management skills of business planning, objective setting, cash management, technology use, talent selection, and effective communication – all of which are necessary to attract funding.

Serial entrepreneur and champion of StartUp Suffolk, Tim Meadows-Smith, said: “There actually are no secrets to success. It requires good preparation, hard work, and a willingness to learn from failure.

“You can be kind to yourself, do most of your learning from the failures, and conclusions, of others”.

‘StartUp essentials’ will provide a collection of ‘if only I’d known’ stories, while ‘funding a cash burning business’ will identify how to access sources of funding.

‘Affordable marketing for growth’ will share effective techniques for generating demand while ‘local business support’ will hear from those willing to support new businesses and help them find high quality advice. There is also a conference pack with more than £1,000 of business offers for ‘must have’ services for start-up businesses.

Tickets cost £35 but £20 will be refunded directly to the payment card of all those who attend the full day, thanks to sponsors Lloyds TSB Commercial and Lovewell Blake chartered accountants.
