Bury St Edmunds MP Jo Churchill blamed for no-deal Brexit defeat after she forgot to cast her vote
Jo Churchill MP is being blamed for a defeat that could allow MPs to block a no-deal Brexit after she forgot to cast her vote, The Times has reported.
MPs voted on Dominic Grieve's amendment, which asked for MPs to have to give fortnightly updates on the situation in Northern Ireland, on Monday evening.
But the MP for Bury St Edmunds, who is also a Tory whip, did not appear on the division lists.
The amendment, which could make it harder for the next Prime Minister to suspend Parliament and force through a no-deal Brexit, was passed by a single vote (294-293).
Footage of the result being read out shows Mrs Churchill covering her face with her hand.
MPs told The Times that Mrs Churchill had acted as a proxy for Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, but had forgotten to cast her own vote.
One added that the chief whip Julian Smith tried to rectify the mistake but 'had to give up'.
Mrs Churchill has been approached for comment.
