Chris Ingham previews the best jazz gigs around the eastern region this week (October 16-23).

theo jackson quintet: (Stoke By Nayland Hotel, 8pm, £15 . Details: www.dovbear.co.uk/fleece) Up and coming pianist/vocalist with a growing reputation for inventive, in-the-tradition musicianship, with Jo Caleb (guitar), Huntly Gordon (bass) and Marco Quarantotto (drums).

saturday october 17 – art deco hot 5 featuring simon denny: (Horringer Community Centre, 7.30pm, £12.50. Details: 01284 735754) A jazz event with a buffet suppet thrown in. Tickets only, bring your own drinks and glasses.

sunday october 18 – karen sharp quintet: (California Club, Ipswich, 8pm, £14. Details: www.ipswichjazzclub.co.uk) Former Humphrey Lyttelton saxophonist is now one of the most lyrical and swinging players in the UK. Her all-star band features Robert Fowler (saxophone/clarinet), Robin Aspland (piano), Dave Green (bass) and Steve Brown (drums).

andy bowie quartet: (Tram Shed, Cambridge, 8.30, free) Tenor saxophone-playing philosophy professor leads a quartet presenting a connoisseur’s choice from the modern jazz repertoire.

monday october 19 – jazz jam: (The Fat Cat Brewery Tap, Norwich, 8.30pm, free. Details: jazzjam.org.uk) Established and friendly jam session led by bassist Brendan Youngs and guitarist Lee Vasey. All instrumentalists and singers welcome for sitting in.

wednesday october 21 – paul higgs: (Lakeside Country Club, Lyng, 8pm, £12. Details: www.lakeside-jazz.com) Superb trumpeter Higgs leads an evening in which he tells the history of jazz with musical illustrations in the company of Chris Ingham (piano), Rev. Andrew Brown (bass) and Jeff Lardner (drums).

thursday october 22 – sole bay jazz band: (Maltings Pavilion, Ditchingham, 8pm, free. Info: 01986 896143) Residency for established and popular Dixieland band, featuring Ray Simmons (trumpet), Tim Densham (clarinet/sax), Ron Hockett (clarinet/saxophone), Alan Cugnoni (banjo/guitar), Tony Jullings (bass) and Craig Hipperson (drums).

friday october 23 – phil meadows group: (Stoke By Nayland Hotel, 8pm, £15 . Details: www.dovbear.co.uk/fleece) Impressive young contemporary composer and saxophonist Meadows leads a dazzling quintet of the “next generation of jazz gods” (Time Out) on what he calls the Lifecycle Tour, with Laura Jurd (trumpet), Elliot Galvin (piano), Flo Moore (bass) and drummer (Simon Roth).

friday october 24 – pete oxley and nic meier: (Hunter Club, Bury, 8pm, £12. Details www.headhunterslive.org) Pete Oxley returns to his former hometown with fellow guitarist Nic Meier for an evening of spellbinding, virtuosic guitar duets using a variety of instruments and textures to create powerfully evocative moods.
