JAZZ MATTERS: Chris Ingham’s weekly jazz round-up for the east (August 7-14)




Chris Ingham previews the best jazz gigs around the eastern region this week (August 7-14).

SUNDAY, AUGUST 9 - BOB DORE PRESENTS (Old Bell, Sahem Toney, nr. Watton, Norfolk, 3.30pm) Long-established East Anglian drummer hosts a lunchtime jazz session in Norfolk.

ANDY BOWIE QUARTET (Tram Shed, Cambridge, 8.30, free) Tenor saxophone-playing philosophy professor leads a quartet presenting a connoisseur’s choice from the modern jazz repertoire.

MONDAY, AUGUST 10 - OPEN MIC NIGHT/JAM (Maddermarket Theatre Bar, Norwich, doors 7pm, music 8pm, £5/free to participants. Details: norwichjazzclub.co.uk) All musicians and vocalists welcome to this supportive and friendly monthly open mic/jazz jam, with your resident hosts Simon Brown (piano), Ivars Galenieks (bass) and Brian McAllister (drums).

JAZZ JAM (The Fat Cat Brewery Tap, Norwich, 8.30pm, free. Details: jazzjam.org.uk) Established and friendly jam session led by bassist Brendan Youngs and guitarist Lee Vasey. All instrumentalists and singers welcome for sitting in.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 13 - SOLE BAY JAZZ BAND (Maltings Pavilion, Ditchingham, 8pm, free. Info: 01986 896143) Residency for established and popular Dixieland band, featuring Ray Simmons (trumpet), Tim Densham (clarinet/sax), Ron Hockett (clarinet/saxophone), Alan Cugnoni (banjo/guitar), Tony Jullings (bass) and Craig Hipperson (drums).

SUNDAY, AUGUST 23 - GEORGIA MANCIO/MARK CROOKS QUINTET (The Apex Lounge, Bury, 11.30am, £9.50. Details: www.theapex.co.uk) The brunchtime Sunday Songbook series continues with the beauty of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s bossa nova.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 29/SUNDAY, AUGUST 30 - JAZZ WEEKENDER 2015 (Norwich: details www.norwichjazzclub.co.uk) 14 shows over two days in two Norwich venues, including Claire Martin, Georgina Jackson, Partisans, Gabrielle Ducomble and more.
