Suffolk will have a new Bishop for the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich from October.

The Rt Revd David Thomson, Bishop of Huntingdon, will take over as interim bishop for the diocese until a permanent bishop is found.

It comes after the current Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich The Rt Revd Nigel Stock, was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury to become Bishop of Lambeth, part of Archbishop Justin Welby’s senior team, from October.

The Very Revd Dr Frances Ward, Dean of St Edmundsbury Cathedral said: “Whilst the whole diocese will miss Bishop Nigel enormously, we are happy to welcome Bishop David as he oversees our diocese at a time of transition whilst we await the appointment of a new diocesan bishop.

“I know Bishop David and have every confidence that he is the right person to undertake this unusual role.”
