Award winning children’s author Gill Lewis encouraged nearly 600 children to get into reading when she visited two Bury St Edmunds schools today.

The author of the Puppy Academy series, who is a former vet, used pictures of her own dogs, who inspired the series, as puppies to break the ice at Hardwick Middle School in the morning and Guildhall Feoffment Primary in the afternoon. Children from Westgate and Hardwick Primary Schools also attended the talks organised by Bury Schools Partnership reading champion Philip Daws.

Gill admitted she had been a reluctant reader at school.

She added: “I hope this takes away that fear of reading. What I like to do when I go to schools is to encourage them to write to get them into stories.”
