A home care assistant has received thanks from a Bury St Edmunds man she has helped for almost 20 years while being commended for her service to a local charity.

Eileen Byford, also from Bury, was presented with a long service award from Age UK Suffolk, with whom she has been working for two decades.

Ms Byford’s most long-standing client, Tony Atienza, was with her when she received her commendation. She has been visiting Mr Atienza, 94, and previously his wife for around 18 years, providing invaluable help to the family.

Mr Atienza said: “Eileen keeps me going, she is really caring. I didn’t know what having help meant until I met Eileen. It’s reassuring knowing she is visiting me.”

David Atienza, Tony’s son, said: “Eileen deserves the award thoroughly. She is an absolutely splendid lass – totally reliable, cheerful and a real asset to Age UK.

“She is wonderful, just like a friend to us. It makes my Dad’s day when she pops in.”
