Work to start on West Suffolk Hospital’s new £240k breast cancer unit

Work on a new £240,000 breast cancer unit at West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, is due to start next week.

The unit will bring assessment, imaging, and diagnostic services into one place. At the moment patients have to visit different parts of the hospital and make several changes in and out of hospital gowns.

The costs of the new unit are being met by the Friends of the hospital group, thanks to a generous legacy they were left in a will.

Eamonn Coveney, consultant breast surgeon said: “The new unit will make a huge difference to the experience our breast patients have during what can be a difficult time for them.

“As well as improving privacy, it will help us to provide a more comfortable and convenient service for people attending for investigations, who will no longer need to change in and out of a hospital gown and move between departments.”

The Friends group costs £5 a year to become a member – contact voluntary services on 01284 713206 to join or make a donation.
