More ambulance service staff are being assaulted with a 10 per cent increase reported by the East of England Ambulance Service.
A total of 140 staff were assaulted in 116 incidents across the counties of Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex in 2010/2011.
In Suffolk there were 20 assaults compared to 16 and in Norfolk 25 compared to eight.
The ambulance service last year prosecuted several people for assaults on staff and one man was given a six month jail term for a attack on a member of staff.
Danny Daniel, health, safety and security manager for the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said assaults against staff, sometimes by the very people they were trying to help, were completely intolerable.
“These acts of aggression carried out while staff try to go about their day to day work helping those in need not only affects those staff themselves but potentially presents challenges in getting resources out to other incidents,” he said.
