Councillors discussed the importance of West Suffolk College having links with a university campus stressing the benefits for the town.

Concerns were raised by town councillors that the opportunity could bypass the town after a report by Bury’s Town Centre Management Committee outlined the economic benefits to the town.

There were also some concerns raised that existing links with Anglia Polytechnic would be weakened.

Councillors decided they would invited West Suffolk College principal Ann Williams to attend a future meeting.

Cllr Stefan Oliver said the town needed to put its case forward as soon as possible.

Bury was blooming and taking top honours as it took the large town trophy for Britain in Bloom allowing it to represent Britain in the European in Bloom competition. - Entente Floral.

Bury also won the Asmer Trophy for producing the best display of bedding plants from seed by a Parks Department.

50 years ago

There was fierce opposition to a suggestion that East and West Suffolk councils should merge and become one authority.

The main objections from the west were the adverse affects of a merger on West Suffolk’s expansion plans and the administrative distances it would create.
