Haverhill bands Umbrella Assassins and Three Screaming Popes are included on a new compilation album due out this week.
Cambridge Calling Volume 1 is the brainchild of Dave Hammond, who for five years has presented a fortnightly show on Cambridge 105 Radio called The Smelly Flowerpot - a nod to John Peel’s show in the 1960s, The Perfumed Garden.
Dave explained: “The ethos of the show is to play new and unsigned music by bands from all over the world, with a particular focus on Cambridge/Haverhill area artists.
“All genres of music are played on the show from punk to progressive, world music to folk, indie to electronica, even something described by one band as ‘mutant chill wave disco’.
“I regularly have artists on the show for interviews/live sessions and it was this that prompted the idea of putting together a compilation showcasing the local music scene.
“I started working on the compilation over a year ago and the response has been phenomenal. There’s already enough interest for another two volumes which we’re looking to release later in the year.
The album is released through Salford-based German Shepherd Records, which has released several albums and singles by bands from Cambridgeshire area and is keen to promote the vibrant scene in the area while also raising funds for the Arthur Rank Hospice.
The album is out on Friday, March 17 and will be available via the label and itunes, Amazon, Spotify, Dweezer, Napster etc.
