Weddings are supposed to be memorable occasions but the two that took place in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday were more memorable than most.
Simon Francis and Michelle, nee Warby, were ready to give a fairy tale ending to their love story when they turned up dressed as Shrek and Princess Fiona for an unusual wedding ceremony in The Athenaeum on Angel Hill, driven by a skeleton on a trike motorcycle.
Getting into the spirit of Halloween, the couple, from Bury, invited their guests to join them in fancy dress, and they were certainly not disappointed.
Their special day was witnessed by witches and ghouls and a colourful array of characters from Popeye the Sailor and Olive Oyl to Peter Pan and Tinkerbell, even a few Little Red Riding Hoods.
Captain Jack Sparrow, Batman, Spiderman, a wolf, Darth Vader, a stormtrooper and a leprechaun were also spotted among their guests.
In keeping with the Shrek theme, the bride’s parents, Pat and Frank Warby, went dressed as Princess Fiona’s parents Queen Lillian and King Harold.
Frank said: “It was a novelty. Everybody really enjoyed it and had a good time.”
Mick Apicella and Shari, nee Byrne, were wed in a Halloween-themed ceremony at The Athenaeum later the same day.
Adhering to a black and purple colour scheme and arriving in a psychedelic VW camper van, Shari and her bridesmaids carried broomsticks and wore witch hat fascinators, while Mick was dressed in a black suit and wore a prank ball and chain.
Shari, who met her groom through an internet dating website, said: “There’s nothing conventional about our wedding at all.”
The Hollywell Row couple’s celebrations continued at the Lakenheath Pavilion... where they hosted a Halloween grotto.
