The chief executive of Greene King has welcomed support for a Government review into the impact of rising beer duty on pubs.

Rooney Anand, boss of theBury St Edmunds based brewery and pubs firm, was speaking after a call for a review into the beer duty escalator, gained overwhelming support in the House of Commons.

“Since the introduction of the beer duty escalator in 2008, duty on beer has risen 42 percent, driving up the retail price of beer in pubs,” said Mr Anand.

“At the same time, in the off-trade, alcohol remains available at pocket-moneyprices.

“These factors have contributed to the closure of over 5,800 pubs in the last four years.”

He called for the Government to scrap the beer tax to safeguard jobs.
