Graduates heap praise on Bury St Edmunds sugar firm

Have your say

Graduates opportunities have seen British Sugar ranked for the first time in two high profile business lists.

The business, which has a production site in Bury St Edmunds, has been listed in The Times Top 100 and the Guardian UK 300 graduate employers.

It is the first time that the company has made the lists, which are voted for by UK graduates, and which recognise the business as an employer which offers first class opportunities to graduates.

Over the past ten years the firm has recruited and trained more than 100 graduates and 90 apprentices, developing a ‘talent pipeline’ for its future. The firm says recruiting graduates is vital to its success – a number of its current management team began their careers with British Sugar on the graduate scheme.

Gino De Jaegher, managing director of British Sugar said: “We are delighted that British Sugar has been ranked in The Times Top 100 and the Guardian 300 annual surveys. “This achievement truly recognises the importance we place on our graduate scheme and identifying our future managers.

“We focus on ensuring our scheme remains relevant to our business and attractive to graduates.

“We firmly believe our scheme and the representation of former graduates on our management team are proof of its success in finding our business leaders of the future.”

The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers listings rank the organisations seen to offer the best graduate opportunities, carried out for the Times by High Fliers Research. The league table is based on the results of a survey of over 17,000 students from the top 30 universities in the UK, all of whom are about to graduate and are looking to start their first graduate job.

The Guardian UK 300 is the UKs largest and most comprehensive survey of student opinion on graduate careers and employers. All students are invited to take part in the survey via an email, with the research conducted by trendence, one of Europe’s leading research institutes.

The British Sugar Graduate Scheme offers the following disciplines: Engineering, Science, Agriculture, Business Procurement and Finance. Further information on British Sugar can be found at and more information on the graduate schemes and apprenticeships can be found at
