GOLDEN wedding couple Ian and Rita Laidlaw made sure their memories of their celebrations were miles better.
They jetted nearly 5,000 miles for a two-week trip to India, a visit to the Taj Mahal and the chance for Ian to return to the country of his birth.
Ian, 72, met his bride to be as they lived around the corner from each other and became childhood sweethearts before marrying in Felixstowe.
He served in the Royal Marines for more than 20 years, working his way up to rank of sergeant major. The couple now live in Fornham St Martin.
Before retirement, Ian was appointed manager to oversee the opening of the then new Rollerbury rink and other venues associated with the same company.
He was the manager and then director of Rollerbury for many years and Reflex (now Brazilias) nightclub, too.
He later became front of house manager at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds.
Ian and Rita, who had worked for Marks and Spencer and Boots, have a daughter Jackie, son Jeff and three grandchildren, Rebecca, Ellen and Josh.
The couple say the secret of their long marriage is that they are compatible and like similar things. Ian’s tours of duty with the Marines brought them closer together as they had to spend time apart. “Basically they just love each other,” said Jeff.
