Whether you want a family forest cycle ride or a tough 10-day challenge, you can do it for Beat It!

Two healthy fund raisers for our appeal to buy a prostate probe for West Suffolk Hospital are taking entries.

The fund raising cyclists of St Edmunds Wheel have organised 10 and 20 mile off-road cycle rides through King’s Forest from Balloon Barn Farm at Culford for Beat It and West Suffolk Hospital’s Breast Cancer Unit.

There is direct forest access from the farm, so you do not have to cross a road.

Wheel trustee Brian Hurrell said: “It’s reasonably flat, all forest tracks. You’d be better with off-road tyres but you don’t need an elaborate bike to do it. Families can do it.

“There will be drinks on the route and refreshments back at the farm.”

The ride starts at 10am on Sunday October 13 but if you are entering on the day, Brian suggests getting there at 9.30am. It will also cost £5 more than registering in advance, which requires £20-worth of sponsorship, on or 01284 761837. All the money goes to the charities.

If that sounds too easy, register for the 10km for 10 days challenge launched last month by staff at the hospital.

Participants walk, run or use their local gym to complete 10km daily between Thursday December 5 and Saturday December 14.

Dave Gooderham, fundraising manager at the hospital, said: “The event has a dual purpose – promoting a healthier lifestyle and helping us reach our £55,000 target by Christmas.

Anyone who registers to take part is sent a pack including a 10-week training programme designed by Joe Harvey, health and fitness coordinator at South Suffolk Leisure in Sudbury.

Joe said: “The hospital is something that we can all relate too while the event shares our ethos of regular fitness and healthy living.”

To sign up for the challenge, send a £10 cheque made payable to West Suffolk Hospital to Fundraising Department, West Suffolk Hospital, Hardwick Lane, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP33 2QZ.
