Jason Aldous and Mark Belcher are certain they have picked the right time to start manufacturing joists and roof trusses.
Their order book seems to suggest they are right because after only a week in business A & B Timber Engineering has enough orders to take them to the end of March.
Jason said: “From a standing start, that’s a pretty good result.”
At their factory on Shepherds Grove Industrial Estate at Stanton, Mark added: “We’re right on the doorstep of Bury and Stowmarket which is a good area to be in. There seems to be plenty of building going on – the confidence is coming back.”
Jason has 18 years experience in the business. Mark, who runs Michael Belcher builders with his father, had bought trusses and joists from Jason’s former employers New World Timber Frames in Saffron Walden for about four years.
The two are friends and neighbours in Stowmarket so when the chance came to buy New World’s machinery, they took it.
Michael Belcher was using the Stanton site as a builder’s yard, though there was a steel-framed building there.
Mark said: “We’ve cleaned it up and turned it over to manufacturing and given people the chance to earn some money.”
They have created five new jobs on the site.
They make roof trusses and engineered flooring joists and Jason said: “We can make anything from a set of trusses for a garden shed to, well, we’re doing a hospital in Felixstowe.
“We can manufacture up to 14 metres long.”
The size of the larger products means transport costs can be high if they have to go long distances.
Jason said: “There is a gap in this area. We will be able to service the local builders in the Bury area.”
Keeping it in the family, Mark’s wife Brenda runs A & B Timber Engineering’s office.
