Freckenham church lead theft
Police are warning communities to be vigilant after a lead theft from a church in a village near Mildenhall.
At around 2.30am this morning (June7),a member of the public disturbed a group of offenders stealing lead from the roof of St Andrews’ Church, in Freckenham.
The group then got into a car and drove off, the police were called and following a search of the area, officers located an abandoned black BMW 3 Series nearby in Fordham Road, which contained a quantity of lead.
Sgt Brian Calver, of the Rural Policing Team, said: "I’m urging communities that live near churches to remain extremely vigilant and check out any suspicious noises they hear around the church at night.
"If you suspect that there are offenders on site, dial 999 as this is a heritage crime in progress and the losses can and do amount to tens of thousands of pounds.
"Do not approach or disturb the offenders, as by reporting and observing discreetly, it will allow police officers the chance to get to the scene and apprehend those involved.”
Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the Rural Policing by email -email@example.com or calling 101, quoting reference number 32430/19.
