Fornham St Martin family prepare for rally
In November, the Endurance Rally Association will be organising the Rally of the Incas, a 5,000-mile journey that will take competitors from Buenos-Aires in Argentina to the finish in the capital of Peru - Lima, writes Arthur Debenham
For a local crew, it will be a long route in every sense, as husband and wife Andrew and Gina Long tackle it in their 1968 MGC GT Sebring.
This car, immaculate in British Racing Green, is powered by a straight-six three-litre engine, and it attracted a good deal of interest at last weekend’s Motorsport Show, which formed part of the Whitsun Fayre.
The Fornham St Martin farming family are well known for their annual Cars by the Lake Classic Car show, which raised money for St Nicholas Hospice, and will be doing so again on September 4, this year.
The Angel Hill based show proved extremely popular, and raised several hundred pounds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
It was good to catch up with several regular competitors and to establish contact with new ones.
Of the latter, Robert Peachey informed me of his karting activities which see him competing on a regular basis in the Rotax Max 125 category at Red Lodge.
Mark Cossey called in to tell me about his involvement in Historic Stock Cars, which had seen him take his MKI Ford Cortina to a fourth and eighth place finish in the heats at Great Yarmouth on Sunday, but retirement in the final.
Having raced a Caterham for some four seasons, local racer Andy Coombs has recently taken a two-year break from the sport, but his is now intending to return at Oulton Park later this month (June).
This time he will be at the wheel of a Mazda MX5 in the Supercup run by the BRSCC.
Coombs has obtained a two-year sponsorship deal with Fix Auto Loughborough, and co-director Paul Smith is delighted to become involved in the sport.
The car will be run by JZ Racing Developments, who hope to build a second car for a young driver.
The Supercup has been a feeder series into the British National GT Series, and benefits from coverage on Motors TV shortly after each round.
Overall victory and class wins eluded competitors from West Suffolk MC at the recent round of the AMSC Challenge Series, organised by Wickford AC.
Clear overall winners were Andrew Bainbridge/Alan Coombs in a Renault Clio Williams, more than one minute clear of a close fought battle for second position which saw Gavin Rogers/Derek Rogers bring their Escort home just 00.01 seconds ahead of the MKII version of Mark Wade/Jonathan Williams.
Best results for West Suffolk Motor Club drivers came from Paul Webb/William Pawsey, MX5 - third class NB, Laura Christmas/Mark Manning, Austin Mini - third class EA, and also a third in class NA for Mark Redgate/Andrew Smith, MG ZR.
The Historic award for pre 1985 cars went to Laura Christmas/Mark Manning in the 1298cc Mini.
