Food idea should spark us into action

I was stunned to read an estimate that the UK throws away £13 billion of food every year.

Take a moment to re-read that: £13 billion.

So the news this week coming out of Marks and Sparks in Bury St Edmunds – Store donates surplus food to Bury St Edmunds charity – is refreshing and timely. The Butter Market store has agreed to give its unsold food on a daily basis to Bury Drop In. It’s part of the retailer’s nationwide food redistribution scheme.

Bury Drop In chief Mike Coleman says the food is already helping to feed about 150 people a week – some of those attend the drop-in and some are in the wider community.

Nando’s, Tesco, Greggs, Mings Oriental and Street Level Cafe already donate, so hats off to those names, too.

Positive action to help a pressing issue such as feeding the homeless and vulnerable in our area of Suffolk is welcome and should be trumpeted.

Perhaps we, as shoppers, can show our support for these larger and smaller retailers and restaurants by supporting them with our custom.
