THOUSANDS of chickens were saved after burning diesel threatened two large hen houses at Great Ashfield airfield

Thirty five firefighters were called to the fire on Tuesday afternoon after a fire in a wooden building caused a diesel tank to rupture.

Burning diesel was pooling towards two larger chicken sheds housing around 17,000 chickens each and one shed caught fire.

Limited water supplies on the scene meant that four more fire engines were called in to bring water to the site.

Elmswell watch commander Brian Hawes said they needed to bring in more water to the site to save the sheds and birds inside.
