SUFFOLK firefighters received a boost to their safety following the launch of a new breathing kit.
The county’s 35 stations have been equipped with Spiroguide II kits after a 10-year contract was signed with Interspiro Ltd.
Each new breathing kit includes a computer with a digital display which monitors air supply at all times.
It also calculates a safe turnaround point in confined areas and uses an automatic distress signal to help nearby firefighters locate a colleague in an emergency.
Cllr Colin Spence, Suffolk County Council’s portfolio holder for public protection, said: “Our firefighters do such an important job and their safety is paramount. This means providing them with equipment that will protect them in some very difficult circumstances.
“I’m proud that this equipment, when coupled with our recently issued structural firefighting clothing, ensures that Suffolk’s firefighters carry some of the best protective equipment available today.”
Wearers of the kit receive a regulated air supply to the mask for up to 38 minutes.
For extra safety, an emergency air supply feature provides crews with emergency air if needed.
