The National Trust says it still does not know when it will be able to make repairs at the West Wing at Ickworth House – but it will fully reopen from next week.

The restaurant and gallery functions suite closed in August when staff discovered a ‘fault’ in the roof.

On Wednesday, the trust, which owns the property, said it is still waiting for an inspection report from structual engineers which will determine both the costs of the work and the timescale involved.

But Sodexo, which run catering and events in the West Wing said the gallery will open next week while the restaurant has been open since September 7.

The ‘fault’ in the building, which serves as a weddings and conferences centre, comes less than eight years after it opened, following a £5 million project between the trust and Sodexo.

A National Trust spokesman said: “Specialist structural engineers are carrying out detailed inspections, and we are expecting a report from them soon, which will enable us to plan the next steps.

“Working with such an historic building has meant the survey has taken some time. It took a specialist team a week just to erect the scaffolding before the survey could start.

“The most important thing has been the safety of all our visitors and staff.”
