Charles established the company in a tin hanger on the Hardwick Industrial Estate repairing cars with a selection of hand tools.
Three of his sons and one daughter joined him, instilling the family values that David said are prized.
C D Friend and Sons has grown drastically and is now located across two premises and employs 16 full and part time staff.

David Friend said the business continues to be successful.
He said: “We have been extremely busy, we have picked up lots off new customers who used to go to main dealers but now money is tight they are coming to us.
“When we moved to Eastgate Street we did not know if it would be a success but it’s just gone from strength to strength.”
