More trains laid on for Ed Sheeran gigs, but Bury St Edmunds fans still miss out

Greater Anglia is running extra and longer trains and on the mainline to and from Ipswich to help people travel to Ed Sheeran’s concerts in Ipswich – however passengers using the Bury St Edmunds branch line will not benefit.

From August 23-26, additional trains will run non the mainline and the last train times have been revised to tie-in with the end of the concert.

Greater Anglia says it has worked with concert organisers to see where fans are travelling from to get to the concert, as well as conducting a travel survey.

Research showed many fans travelling by train to the concert were planning to use the mainline from stations north and south of Ipswich.

Any branch line customers – such as Bury – will need to use the last timetabled services to get to their destination.

It means the last train back from Ipswich to Bury after Sheeran plays on August 25 will be 9.02pm – not long after he is due to be on stage.

On August 23, 24, 25 and 26 the final train will depart Ipswich for Bury at 10.19pm.

James Steward, Greater Anglia area customer service manager, said: “We’ve increased the frequency and length of trains where possible and practical, however we are still expecting services to be very busy. We will do as much as we can to help people travel and there will also be extra staff on hand to provide help and information.

“We would encourage everyone to check before they travel and allow more time for their journeys.”

For those who are travelling by train, a shuttle bus will be run between the station and Chantry Park, costing £3 per person return.

Greater Anglia is warning passengers there are still likely to be large queues and busy trains. In addition to the normal timetable, the following services will run:
