Michael Birnie celebrating 20 years in Bury St Edmunds with exhibition

Michael Birnie is celebrating 20 years of his eponymous jewellery shop in Bury St Edmunds with an exhibition of his career.

The collection will be on display for two weeks inside the shop in Hatter Street, marking his progress from his apprenticeship to study at Glasgow School of Art and London – where he worked before opening in Bury.

“It is mainly pictures,” he said.

“We had a very good opening night, we had 20 or 25 people in the shop, having a look and a chat about it.

“It shows how the trade has changed over the years. Computer aided design is what people now use, and it is a clever technique. The days when we did so much by hand are gone – it is always a changing industry.”

A pendant and earring set has also been created to celebrate 20 years.
