Armed police and the bomb squad have been called to a quiet Suffolk village after a number of weapons were found at a property.

Police have confirmed a 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of ABH and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Officers have been guarding the house, in Potash Lane, Wyverstone, since around 4pm on Sunday.

A police spokesman said they were called to a report of an assault which happened a few days earlier.

He said: “Police received a report on Sunday April 13 that an assault had taken place at an address in Wyverstone on Thursday March 27 against a woman in her 40s.

“Officers attended the address and a 49-year-old-man from the Stowmarket area was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm.

“As part of the investigation, police carried out a search warrant at the property and discovered a number of weapons.

“The 49-year-old was further arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm.

“Officers remain on site to ensure any potentially dangerous items are located and seized.”

Neighbour David Whomes said they have been kept in the dark about what has been happening.

He said: “They were out the front with their guns, they had it all taped off on Sunday and it’s been taped off ever since.

“On the road they have a bomb disposal robot and there has been a policeman guarding it at night.

“But they won’t tell us anything.”

Another neighbour, who wished not to be named, said he had moved his young grandchildren away from the area due to safety concerns.

He added: “I have never seen so many police.

“On Sunday at around 4pm, that’s when it all started - it has been 24 hour guard ever since.

“I have moved my grandchildren away just in case.”
