VOLUNTEERS from the Pickerel Project spent their Sunday morning sprucing up the river banks in Stowmarket.

The group, which was set up in 2000, collected 14 bags of rubbish from a stretch of the River Gipping and also pulled a wheelie bin from the water.

The Pickerel Project meets every month to clear up the river banks. Chairman, Keith Scarff, said: “It’s not unusual to fish shopping trolleys, mattresses, bits of furniture, traffic cones and traffic signs out of the river.”

It also runs special projects and this year plans to clear up overgrown reed beds and remove a form of invasive weed which is prolific in the river

The Pickerel Project invites any members of public to join the monthly clear ups.
