Amy, of Feltwell, celebrates hitting weight-loss target at Mildenhall Slimming World
Four strokes, a brain tumour and cancer would be more than enough to throw most slimmers off course, but one Feltwell woman has defied all odds.
Amy Jones is celebrating hitting her Slimming World target last Wednesday, after shedding more than six stone.
Since 1997 she has suffered four strokes, in May 2018 she had surgery to remove a brain tumour after which she woke paralysed on her right-hand side, was bed-bound for 12 weeks and then had to learn to walk again, before she was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January 2019 and had half her bowel removed.
But despite her setbacks the 41-year-old, who also battles fibromyalgia, IBS, sciatica and has a heart murmur, has been determined to reach a healthy weight.
“I said to Donna, my Slimming World consultant, ‘I need to lose this weight or I will be dead by the time time I am 45’,” said Amy.
After ill health stalled her Slimming World progress in 2018, Amy rejoined the Mildenhall group at the end of February last year. She has since lost six stone and six pounds – and is still losing.
Amy has swapped her size 24 clothes for size 12s, was asked for ID when out with her daughter recently, is able to shop where she wants and feels ‘fantastic’.
“Apart from the pain I suffer most days, I feel amazing and I look 10 years younger,” said Amy.
“But I could not have done all this without the help of Donna and going to group every week.”
Amy said when she stood on the scales and realised she had achieved her target weight she ‘literally screamed’ before she and Donna hugged and cried.
“It has been a very, very hard and emotional journey,” said Amy.
Meanwhile, Amy’s family, who live in Essex, have had trouble recognising her since her dramatic weight loss and her husband is ‘over the moon’ at her success.
“I feel fantastic that I can wear a really nice dress for my sister’s wedding in February. Before, I would have been hiding at the back of the photos but now I will be standing at the front with my sister,” added Amy.
Donna Cooper, consultant at the Mildenhall Slimming World group, said: “This is one of the most inspirational and emotional journeys I have shared in since becoming a consultant in 1995.
“Talk about overcoming adversity and coming out the other side smiling.”
