STUDENTS in Bury St Edmunds learnt about the workings of Parliament during a visit by a member of the House of Lords to their school.
The pupils at County Upper School, in Beeton’s Way, welcomed Baroness Scott as part of the Peers in Schools programme.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Lord Speaker, aims to involve young people in understanding the work of Parliament and to allow them to ask questions.
Headteacher Vicky Neale said: “The students found her to be very approachable and enjoyed both her presentation and the ensuing question and answer session.
“For her part, Baroness Scott described the students as ‘fantastic’.
“At the end, having been so impressed the Baroness invited them to meet her at Westminster.”
Victoria Middleditch, head of faculty, added that the visit was the highlight of an ‘excellent month’ in which a number of different activities were held to mark UK Parliament Week.
She said: “It’s very important young people understand how our parliamentary system works.”
