WHEN the pupils of Elmswell Primary School said goodbye to their retiring head teacher, they did it in musical style.

Diane Hurt was retiring early after five years at the school and 24 years teaching in Suffolk.

“I had a special song written for me, which the children sang to the tune of New York, New York,” she said.

They also sang the school’s traditional leaving song, which is usually reserved for school leavers at the end of the academic year.

Among other gifts, Mrs Hurt was presented with a book of photos of the school’s classes in which each child had written or drawn something for her.

“It was a wonderful occasion,” she said.

She and her husband Philip, who retired at the same time, are planning to travel and spend more time with their family. Their first trip was to Tobago and they hope to visit New Zealand next year.

“Both my sons have been there and say we must see it,” she said.
