AN INQUEST has been opened into the death of a stockcar racer killed in an accident at Mildenhall Stadium.

Steve Newman, 37, of Quadring Fen, Spalding, died on Saturday as he competed in the British Stockcar Championship final.

Dave Coventry, owner of Mildenhall Stadium, said that Mr Newman was involved in a multi-car pile-up after his vehicle rolled – ending up on its roof in the path of other competitors.

Despite receiving medical treatment from paramedics, Mr Newman was declared dead at the scene at 11.35pm.

Mr Coventry described Mr Newman as an experienced driver who was well known and well liked.

Event Organiser, RDC Promotions, has extended condolences to his family, including his two children.

The Oval Racing Council will launch an investigation into the accident, however this will not effect fixtures organised at the stadium.
