The Abbey Gardens Friends has donated £500 to help keep the Bury St Edmunds beauty spot blooming.

Sophie Roebuck, chairman of the group, presented the money to Cllr Terry Clements, deputy mayor of St Edmundsbury, during a social evening.

John Smithson, St Edmundsbury parks operations manager, said the money will be used by park manager Steve Burgess and his gardeners to plant some new specimen shrubs in the borders around the Abbey Gardens.

Cllr Clements said: “I’m delighted to receive this generous donation from the Abbey Gardens Friends on behalf of the borough council.

“It is so good that people like the Friends take ownership and get involved in supporting our local amenities.”

Mrs Roebuck added: “We work with the borough council to promote and enhance the Abbey Gardens for the benefit and enjoyment of the whole community.”
