BURY St Edmunds couple Brian and Dorothy Atkinson celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary yesterday.

The couple met in 1948 when Brian was working at the Peterborough Standard.

“I used to go to the restaurant at the city cinema for lunch. Dorothy worked as a waitress there and that is where it all started,” said Brian.

They married three years later at a village church near Peterborough and moved to Bury with daughters Maureen and Joyce in 1964 when Brian got a job with the Bury Free Press.

The Atkinsons, who have three granddaughters and three great grandchildren, say the secret of a happy marriage is sharing.

“You’ve got to have a bit of give and take ,” said Brian.
