An actor, writer and producer from Barton Mills will make her film debut this year, starring in a drama which she co-wrote with her friend and business partner.

Charlotte Couture, 28, will be travelling to South Wales next month to start filming Oh My Friend, a fantasy drama about love, loss and female friendship.

She will be taking on the adventure with her friend and co-writer Jenny Wilford, 27, who she met while studying English at the University of East Anglia.

The pair then went on to train as actors at Drama Centre London and later founded the Sheer Heights theatre company together.

“We started the company four years ago to make more work for women in the industry as we’re still underrepresented in lots of areas, including writing and acting,” said Charlotte, who now lives near Brixton.

“We’ve never written anything for film and it’s nothing like we’ve put out there as actors before so it’s our debut in more than one sense.”

Charlotte and Jenny have also recruited a female crew to help work on the film, to help open up the industry even further to women.

“Although we’re not directly involved in that side of things, we know that women are struggling to break into all aspects of the film and theatre industry. That’s what really inspired us to make women our focus and support them,” said the former Thetford Grammar School student.

Charlotte first became interested in the theatre after joining the Suffolk Young People’s Theatre group when she was 14 and gaining experience on stage at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds.

“It was my time there that encouraged me to go into the arts. It gave me the chance to act in lead roles and in lots of different productions which was really good preparation for me,” she said.

“I still go to the Theatre Royal a lot now and it’s great to see the great stuff they’re putting on there throughout the year.

“There are lots of lovely supportive people in Bury so it’s always great to come back.”
