Date for annual street fayre set

Have your say

Traders in Bury St Edmunds’ St John’s Street just made the deadline to apply for a street closure order in time for their June 22 street fayre.

The fair has been held for 13 years but in difficult trading times, a question mark hovered over the fayre.

Richard Poole of the menswear shop Aubyn Davies said: “The organisation of this event takes a lot of effort from traders and many are concentrating on how to sustain and increase their business at their own shops. This meant not everyone was as keen as in previous years.”

But he and René an den Oort from Beautiful Beers surveyed all the shop keepers and found the majority wanted it to go ahead.

But Suffolk County Council needs four months notice for street closures and it was only with help from Bid4Bury that the application was made in time.

The fayre will be held on Saturday June 22 from 10am to 5pm.
