A woman was overpaid nearly £3,000 after failing to notify the Department for Work and Pensions she was working.
Melanie Nunn, 36, of Holmsey Green, Beck Row, continued to receive income support between 29 June, 2010, and 21 November, 2011, despite working 12 hours a week. She was overpaid a total of £2,963.92.
Emma Howson, prosecuting, told Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday that Nunn had made enquiries through an advice line but said she would not take up employment after finding out how much of her benefit she would be entitled to keep.
In mitigation, Claire Lockwood said Nunn had stopped working after phoning the advice line. She said Nunn had thought it was her employer’s responsibility to notify the department but accepted now that it was her own.
Nunn pleaded guilty and was fined £82.50. She was ordered to pay £40 in costs and a victim surcharge of £20.
