POLICE in Stowmarket are reminding motorists of driving restrictions in the town after issuing 11 fixed penalty notices in just one hour to drivers illegally turning left out of Ipswich Street.
Stowmarket Safer Neighbourhood Team gave out the penalty notices to drivers while carrying out a check following reports that motorists are regularly disregarding traffic signs and illegally turning left out of Ipswich Street and into Tavern Street.
The turning is reserved only for buses, taxis and cyclists.
Police Community Support Officers Ryan Brunning, David Harvey and Claire Cox carried out the check on February 9 between 5pm and 6pm.
Reports from a resident living nearby claimed that rush hour was the prime time for people making the illegal turn.
PCSO Brunning said: “The restrictions are in place to stop people using it as a thoroughfare.
“We are cracking down on it.
“We certainly will be down there more often.”
He said that drivers making the turn gave the excuse that they did so because the roads were busy.
Sgt Neil Patterson, from Stowmarket SNT, said: “We would like to remind motorists of the restrictions when coming out of Ipswich Street and any infringement of these restrictions will be dealt with robustly.
“These restrictions are in place for the safety of both public and drivers.
“I hope that motorists who were dealt with will now have a better understanding of the restrictions in place.”
