A MAN who stabbed his ex-partner in a row over their child has been jailed for 12 years.

Sergio Miguel Lapa, of Edmund Moundeford Road, Feltwell, was found guilty of the attempted murder of Ana Simoes, 23, at Norwich Crown Court in April.

He was sentenced last Friday at the same court, being handed a 12-year prison term.

Lapa attacked Ms Simoes in an argument outside her home in Winchester Way, Thetford, on October 11 last year.

Detective Sergeant Jane Edwards, from Norfolk Police’s Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit, said: “The severity of the sentence Sergio Lapa received underlines how horrific the attack was on his ex-partner.

“A restraining order has been issued by the Crown Court upon Lapa’s conviction to protect the victim from further contact from him.

“Our priority is to ensure victims of domestic violence get the help and support they need and we will continue our focus on prosecuting offenders.”

According to police, the row erupted after Lapa asked to see their son. When Ms Simoes came out holding the child, Lapa took him from her and placed him in the back seat of the car.

He then immediately turned round and stabbed Ms Simoes in the stomach. The knife went through her abdomen causing internal injuries, before Lapa repeatedly stabbed her, leaving her with life threatening injuries.

Lapa, 36, left the scene by car and drove to a nearby health centre. On arrival he handed over his child and admitted stabbing Ms Simoes.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene at around 8am. They found Ms Simoes conscious and breathing but with serious stab wounds.

The air ambulance was called but the victim was eventually taken to West Suffolk Hospital by road. She was in a critical condition when she arrived at the hospital.

Lapa’s attack was the second serious stabbing on the Abbey Estate in the space of four months.

In June of last year, Anthony Adams was killed by Ryan Bowers in an incident in Ely Way.

Bowers, 19, was jailed for a minimum of 20 years in January.
