Bank holiday a boost for Britain’s burglars

COMMUNITIES are pulling together this month to throw open their doors for celebrations marking the Royal Wedding, while many others shut up their homes for long weekends away.

But this leaves homes vulnerable to burglars and an AXA Insurance study has revealed that burglars are wise to events where people are likely to be away, with burglaries surging by 50 per cent.

In East Anglia, 11 per cent of people are planning to go away. And five per cent of people in the region plan to hold a street party, with 17 per cent inviting people over for a celebration. Of that number, 60 per cent admit to leaving entrances to their property open.

James Barclay, AXA home insurance underwriting manager, said: “We don’t want to pour cold water on everybody’s fun but people need to be aware of the risks before their holiday or party turns into an expensive claim.”
