Advice after oil thefts

Have your say

SUFFOLK Police have issued advice to help residents turn up the heat on oil thieves at Christmas.

The warning to keep heating oil safe and secure follows 10 thefts since the start of the month in rural areas including Barrow, Bildeston, Brandon, Lakenheath, Ousden and Wetherden.

More than 4,000 litres of heating oil were stolen in the incidents.

To prevent thefts, people should screen tanks with fencing or hedges, close and secure any gates leading to the tank and conceal outside pipes and fuel lines.

They should also install dusk to dawn security lighting, lockable caps with a closed shackle padlock and consider installing a tank alarm.

Crime reduction officer Bernard Plume said: “If you see any suspicious persons or vehicles in your road or a neighbour’s driveway, contact the police immediately.

“We need people to be vigilant. Sometimes when reports come in to us, the oil could have been taken at any time over the preceding weeks or even months.

“We would urge householders to regularly check the level in their tanks.”
