A grandfather who wants his grandsons to try tennis says courts in Bury St Edmunds’ Abbey Gardens are a ‘disgrace’.

John Plumb, of Fornham St Martin, played on the courts as a boy but says their condition makes them unplayable.

“They’re a disgrace to the Abbey Gardens,” he said. “I was in the Abbey Gardens with my grandsons and would like to have a knock about with them. There’s nowhere else in Bury you can just go and play.”

Sarah Stamp, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and heritage, said the courts are kept safe but they are discussing moving them with English Heritage.

“What we don’t want to do is waste tax payers money carrying out costly repairs only for us to then secure the funds for the courts to be relocated a few months later,” she said.
