Councillors have backed outline plans to build seven homes in gardens between two properties in Norfolk Road, Bury St Edmunds, despite obections by nearby residents.

Plans submitted by John George seek to establish seven homes on the site. An indicative layout shows four semi-detached houses fronting Norfolk Road with two semi-detached bungalows and a detached bungalow directly behind.

Two properties would be affordable.

Objectors say it would be over-development of the site and out of character with existing homes.

A report to yesterday’s development control committee said that while the application constituted ‘backland’ development, the site was significantly larger than other gardens in the road.

Councillors granted officers delegated authority to grant outline planning permission subject to the applicant first entering into a Section 106 agreement in respect of affordable housing.
